Notes/Plot Summary
Charlemagne and Glimmer meet and become friends. Mule takes a deeper journey within the Dark Dominion to meet the "Dark Lord Bottom" who promise to use his power to help Mule become part of the "hard world" again.
Lord Bottom omits some information to Mule and actually uses Mule's body as a conduit to enter the "hard world" himself. Mule is left painfully floored by the event. One of Mule's servants tracks down Glimmer to help Mule.
Meanwhile, Lord Bottom also seeks Glimmer in the "hard world", but finds Charlemagne instead. Charlemagne takes offense with Lord Bottom's ramblings and they fight.

Glimmer eventually finds Mule dying and theorizes that taking Mule back to the Dark Dominion might just save him. Mule protests. Glimmer ignores Mule's protest. Glimmer drags Mule back to the Dark Dominion and saves his life. Mule resents it greatly saying "Back here I feel nothing! Any feeling in the hard world, even agony, is better than this emptiness!" Mule kills his servant that meant to help him. Glimmer wanders off.

Lord Bottom is pulled back into the Dark Dominion as he loses to Charlemagne. Most likely, Lord Bottom was pulled back because Mule, his conduit, was pulled back. Lord Bottom does not understand why he got pulled back, but when he returns Mule is very angry. The story ends with a very changed "Dark Lord Mule" sitting in a throne.
